FAKE IT UNTIL YOU FEEL IT
The following advice comes from the brand director and person in charge of group marketing strategy at supermarket Chain Tesco – business woman and mother of 2 young children, Sharry Crammond.
At the recent conference organised by the women’s group Mumsnet, she passed on a wonderful tip from her own childhood to us all.
Ms Crammond said that she grew up in a family too poor to afford a school blazer when she started secondary school, so her mother scoured second-hand shops. On the first day at her new school, Ms Crammond’s best friend told her the uniform had changed, and that she was wearing a blazer that was the wrong shade of blue.
“I felt like bursting into tears and running all the way home, upsetting me and my mum,” she recalls. “But I chose not to. Instead, I said to her, ‘I actually prefer this colour and that’s why I chose it’.” She repeated this mantra to every child who commented on the blazer. “By the end of the day, I thought, ‘I actually do prefer this colour!’
Moral of the tale? Try telling yourself something over and over, and it will become your truth.
But this is a powerful tool, and works on the negative as well as the positive. If you keep saying ‘I can’t do this’, or “I’m not good enough”, then this will also become your truth.
So watch the way your brain backchats you!
