During my 14 years plus in Recruitment, I have sent literally thousands of people on to job Interviews. For the last 8 years I have run a busy London Nanny Agency, and I deal with Nannies and Housekeepers rather than Office staff, but the principles are the same – I know that one of the most important parts of my work is to give my Applicants good Interview advice.
One thing is watch out for is your body language and appearance – how to sit, what to do with your hands.
The first thing is to shake hands well – a good firm grip, a smile, and an Introduction: “I’m (Whatever your name is” – thank you for seeing me”.
Put down your coat (if you haven’t already hung it up) and bag, and sit down. If you were in an office, an office chair is easy – but many nannies and housekeepers are likely to be interviewed in a lounge, playroom, or even at a kitchen table. Make sure that you don’t sit so far back in a sofa that you are almost horizontal, but also don’t sit right at the edge of the seat so you look nervous! Of course your skirt should not be too short, or your top too low, or wild hair flying – modesty is the name of the game here.
Be aware of your hands – don’t let them fly all over the place, but at the same time it’s not necessary to sit on them. If you are a nervous person, and know that you are likely to fidget, or even worse, bite your nails, either gently hold your hands together on your lap, or take a pad of paper and a pen into the interview, and jot down notes. You won’t actually need to write down more than a few things – but the pen will give you something to hold, so that you won’t fidget!
Answer any questions with a smile – of course you should spend some time before the Interviewing practicing the answers to very likely questions.
If you are applying for the job through a reputable Agency, then really they should help prepare you for an Interview so that you are successful!
